Team & payroll

Salon payroll for commission, hourly and salary pay

Pay each person the way you agreed. ShearCRM adds up their services, retail, tips and hours, checks overtime and minimum wage each week, and hands you a file for QuickBooks Payroll or Gusto.

Payroll is included in the Growth plan.

Pay types

Six ways to pay, one person at a time

Most salons mix them: commission stylists, an hourly assistant and a salaried manager, all in the same payroll.

Commission

A percentage of each person's service sales, with its own rate for retail. The classic stylist setup.

Hourly

Hours from the time clock times their rate. For assistants, the front desk and apprentices.

Hourly + commission

A base hourly rate plus commission on top. Popular for newer stylists building a book.

Greater of hourly or commission

Each week they get whichever is higher, so a slow week never pays less than their hourly rate.

Salary

A set amount each pay period, for managers and full-time front-desk leads.

Salary + commission

A salary with commission on top, for working managers who still take clients.

Example: greater of hourly or commission

A stylist on $15 an hour or 40% commission, whichever is higher, works 32 hours in a week and does $1,400 in services. Hourly pay would be $480; commission is $560, so the week pays $560. In a slow week with $900 in services, commission is $360, so the $480 hourly amount applies instead.

Time clock

Hours that come from the time clock, not a notebook

Staff clock in and out from the ShearCRM app. You review the week, fix a missed punch with a reason, and approve. Approved hours lock once the pay period is approved.

  • Clock in and out from any phone or computer
  • Every edit keeps the original time and a reason
  • An email to you when a punch is left open too long

The rules, handled

Overtime and minimum wage checked every workweek

Commission pay still has to meet minimum wage, and overtime has to include commission in the rate. ShearCRM works both out per workweek, the way federal rules require, so nothing is averaged away across a pay period.

  • Overtime after 40 hours, at 1.5 times a regular rate that includes commission
  • Minimum-wage top-up when commission falls short
  • Tips kept separate and listed on each pay line
  • Weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly pay periods

Questions

Salon payroll: common questions

Does ShearCRM run paychecks and file payroll taxes?

No. ShearCRM works out what each person earned and gives you a file for QuickBooks Payroll or Gusto, which run the paychecks, withholding and tax filings. That keeps your existing payroll provider and accountant in charge of taxes.

Which pay types are supported?

Commission, hourly, hourly plus commission, whichever is higher of hourly or commission, salary, and salary plus commission. Each person has their own setup.

How is overtime worked out?

Per workweek, as federal rules require: hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, and the regular rate includes commission. Tips are kept out of it.

What is the minimum-wage check?

For people paid on commission or a low base, ShearCRM checks each workweek that total pay divided by hours worked reaches the minimum wage you set, and adds a top-up line if it doesn't.

Can staff clock in from their phone?

Yes. Staff clock in and out from the ShearCRM app on any device. Managers can fix a missed punch, and every edit keeps the original time and a reason.

Which plan includes payroll?

Growth, at $99 a month. Salon includes commission tracking and reports without the time clock and payroll.
